THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

One of the greatest tourist attractions of Belgrade - The Zoo or the Cape of Good Hope, is situated in the very center of the city, in the Kalemegdan Park. In 1936, it was founded by the former Mayor, the industrialist Vlada Ilić and opened on the St. Peter's Day, July 12. It belongs to the oldest fauna facilities in Europe.
Already since its very beginning, the Zoo became one of the most favorite places to go out for Belgrade citizens and their guests. Unfortunately, during the bombing in the World War II, it was mostly ruined and almost the entire animal fund was destroyed. At present, the Belgrade Zoo, taking the area of 6 hectares, has got about 200 animal species and more than 2,000 animals. In addition to the wild animals, it takes care also of the domestic ones, equally unknown and interesting to the city children, filling thereby the educational role, in addition to the entertaining one. A special contribution to the garden development is given by many volunteers, as well, who take care of the animals with enthusiasm during their leisure.

The old facilities for the animal accommodation and the newly constructed ones, fountains, a Wood Sculpture Gallery made by the sculptor Vuk Bojović, A nursery for the newborn animals - the Baby Zoo and cafes, complete the ambient. For the 60th birthday, it got a monument to its former most interesting and favorite inhabitant, the monkey Sammy, the first chimpanzee which entered the Zoo and entertained the Belgrade citizens for years, escaping from his cage from time to time.
The Belgrade Zoo, open 365 days in a year, is famous also for many babies, as well as various organized events, intended first of all for children, taking place throughout the year. Improving Belgrade, its citizens and guests, it was called The Cape of Good Hope with the reason.
